Frequently asked questions
Why do solar panels need cleaning?
Dust, bird droppings, pollen, leaves and pollution settle on the glass and block some of the sunlight from reaching the solar cells. Removing that layer helps your system work as it was designed to.
How often should solar panels be cleaned in Gauteng?
For most homes, once or twice a year — ideally after the dry, dusty winter (around August to October). Sites near gravel roads, mines, farms, construction, industry or heavy bird activity may need more frequent cleaning. We'll recommend an interval for your site.
Doesn't the rain clean my panels?

It depends on how dirty the panels were, the weather, panel design and other factors, so we can't promise a specific increase. Heavily soiled panels typically benefit the most. If you have a monitoring app, you can compare output before and after.
Will cleaning damage or scratch my panels?
Not when it's done correctly. We use soft-bristle, water-fed brushes and panel-safe methods, and avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and anything that could harm the glass, coatings, frames or seals.
Do you touch the electrical system?
No. We only clean the panel surfaces and frames, and respect electrical safety boundaries on every site. If we notice a potential problem, we'll tell you so a qualified electrician or installer can check it.
Are your staff trained?
Yes. Solar Star is ISCA approved (International Solar Cleaning Academy), and our staff are trained in correct solar cleaning methods, equipment handling, working at height and site safety.

Do I need to be home during the clean?
Not necessarily. We need safe access to the property and the roof area, and ideally an outside tap. Many clients simply leave the gate code or have someone let us in.
Do I need to switch my system off?
We'll advise you on the day. In general we never open or touch electrical components — we only clean the panel surfaces and frames.
